Phoenix: A poem for Susan by Charlotte Koons

PHOENIX

Last year, Susan gifted me
With a ribboned Firebird
Neck stretching out, eyes that move.
Somehow, I knew it was meant to be
Her symbol ~
PHOENIX.
space
Launching skyward in righteous belief
Then spiraling down,
Into searing flames of grief,
To somehow recreate itself
Again and again,
Anew ~
PHOENIX
space
So let us now be true
To Susan’s symbol ~
PHOENIX.
And, when in despair
Of the endless scourge of war
Fly fearlessly,
Above desolation’s all consuming fires,
Into the darkened skies of crisis.
Soaring on the sheltering wings of Isis,
WE WILL BE Susan’s beloved ~
PHOENIX
