PeaceSmiths has launched a new, announce-only list-serve. We want to make it easy for you to get reminder e-mails about our coffeehouse and other important news. See info and instructions at the read more!

Choose one of these three easy ways to get signed up for our new list-serve:

1. Go to this web address and click on the big “Join This Group” button:

2. Send a blank e-mail to:

3. Contact our Coordinator and ask for an easy-invite to be sent to your e-mail box.

Contact info: OR leave a message on the hotline with your phone number, or your e-mail spelled clearly: (631) 798-0778.

PeaceSmiths, Inc. is a Long Island based non-profit dedicated to issues of peace, justice and the environment. We are known for our coffeehouse which has been running for over thirty years: PeaceSmiths Topical, A-Typical, Music, Poetry and Whatever Coffeehouse (with open mic)

PeaceSmiths is excited to have set up an announce-only list-serve, so you can keep up with PeaceSmiths events. We hope that this will make sure everyone gets timely reminders of our events, and that the reminders increase attendance at our monthly coffeehouse.

As some of you know, we recently changed the schedule so that we do not have regular forums. So, being on this list-serve will alert you when a forum is planned.

And, don’t forget the summer fundraiser! (You won’t forget it, if you are on this list-serve!)

We know that many of our activist colleagues get lots of e-mails. So, this list will only include important PeaceSmiths membership information and announcements about PeaceSmiths events sent out by our Coordinator or a board member. We expect you will never receive more than 2 e-mails a week. (If we decide to include more announcements, or change the set-up, we will let you know first.)

Background and our next, big event:

As many of you know, PeaceSmiths, Inc. is a non-profit, membership organization which is dedicated to peace, justice and environmental issues. PeaceSmiths was begun in 1972, and we have the network, archives, and cultural history to prove it! (We have at least one song written about us!)

Our next “PeaceSmiths, Topical, A-Typical, Music, Poetry and Whatever Coffeehouse” will be Friday, February 5, 2010 at 8pm at the First United Methodist Church in Amityville. Hosted by Sonny Meadows, with: music by Tim Huss, a “Bring Your Own Poetry” set in the middle, and music by Frank Gambino. (The FUMC where we hold the coffeehouse is convenient to the Amityville train station. Call ahead for a pick-up at the station.)

We are sending this e-mail to a fairly big list. We are trying to consolidate contacts collected over the years by Susan June Blake, Margie, and myself, as well as from sign-up sheets from our events.

We thought we should also use this big shout-out to give a boost to some worthy, ongoing local vigils. PeaceSmiths cherishes active nonviolence. Perhaps you will demonstrate the principle of active nonviolence by taking some time this month to stand in solidarity at a local peace vigil?

Some long-running, local vigils (There are other good vigils, though these were ones we tracked down all the details for in time for this announcement.)

Some Long Island Peace Vigils:

EVERY Friday in Sayville at 4 pm
Railroad Ave & Main St.
(Women In Black)

EVERY Saturday in Bellport at 11 am
Station Road & South Country Road
(Women In Black)

EVERY Saturday in Setauket at 11 am
Bennetts Road & Rte 25A
(North Country Peace Group)

1st Wednesday of each month in Shirley at 4 pm
William Floyd Pkwy & Montauk Hwy (South Country Peace Group)

You should also be able to find peace vigils in Freeport, Greenlawn, and Patchogue. Call the hotline and leave a message if you want us to dig up the info for you.

Please join our list-serve, and support peace, justice, the environment, poetry, live music, and…the PeaceSmiths community.

I am in Suffolk does anyone know when this will be airing on public access near me?

John is the Public Access activist who tapes and airs PeaceSmiths. I think it usually takes him a few weeks to prepare a show and get it up on Public Access. I think our sidebar on the website has fairly accurate times for all of John’s shows (they may be a season off, but I think some are the same, or similar times). PeaceSmiths could show up on any of his timeslots. “PeaceSmiths Get Involved!Thursday mornings at 1:30am / Church of ComedyFriday mornings at 2:00am / Harmony Rising Saturday morning at 4am” You could also check listings at Cablevision for those shows. I will also see if I can get a more specific answer from him. And/or, you could check directly with Robert and Jean.

Actually Jean told me to ask you, haha. If you could try to get the specifics it would be much appreciated. I will see if I can find it in the listings as well. Thanks!

LOL! Well, I guess we all have confidence that one of us on the team will get the work done! I will try to figure it out for you. Thanks again for performing! Peace, Kimberly
