Subject: Zealous Advocacy in the Age of “Anti-terrorism.” What can a lawyer do?

Speaker Robert Boyle is a NYC attorney and a member of the Executive Committee of the National Lawyers Guild.

Sponsored by: Five Towns Forum

Contact: Rochelle Dorfman at (516) 623-5689Background:

For years the federal government has acted in extrajudicial ways to target activists and to stifle dissent. The Black Panther Party (BPP) which consisted of a relatively small number of people (polls showed that a majority of African American supported that party) became the target of the FBI’s counterintelligence program (COINTELPRO). That program used a variety of illegal tactics to destroy the Party and incarcerate its leaders. While this may seem like old news, many BPP members remain in jail from those days in the early 1970’s. One can reasonably argue that COINTELPRO is still with us under the guise of anti-terrorism.

Robert Boyle specializes in criminal defense, post conviction work and civil rights. Notable cases include winning the appeal in 2008 for Sheik Mohammed Al-Moayad, a Yemeni cleric arrested in Germany during an FBI sting, convicted and given 75 years. The appeal was won and he was released back to his native Yemen in August of ‘09. He also represented Dhoruba Bin Wahad, a former BPP leader, freed after 19 years when it was proven he was framed. He has worked for years on cases involving former and present Black activists, particularly, former members of the Black Panther Party. He intends to have with him many actual FBI documents that illustrate this conduct on the government’s part.
