Kimberly’s personal musings on why you must come to PeaceSmiths!June is the last one of the season!

The PeaceSmiths Coffeehouse has been happening for over 30 years at various places throughout Long Island. We run from October through June, on the first Friday of the month. For the last few decades the PeaceSmiths Coffeehouse has been in the attic of The First United Methodist Church. If you have never been, you must come at least once to see this tradition of socializing and activism. You may find: folkies, poets, demonstrators (usually not demonstrating against us), activists, community leaders, politicians (we sometimes hold debates, or let attendees give personal stump speeches), grown-ups, children, octogenarians (we have sometimes designated a special section on the most comfortable couch), traveling musicians, environmentalists, artists, old hippies, new hippies, hipsters, and volunteers. Everyone is invited to leave literature on the biggest and coolest lit table in town. (We do make sure it has something to do with local music or our mission!) We make announcements about local activist and cultural events, you can see if there is a spot to make your announcement from the stage. The spread is vegetarian, with some vegan choices. Often just chips and some veggies, but we love vegetarian food donations. Lots of time for socializing (but please don’t talk when the poets are reading!). Mood lighting, great fun, and, okay…a little like being transported back in time to the 60’s!
