Video: PeaceSmiths and Strawberries

Lisa Votino-Tarrant — Matauqus’s wife, and an activist from Eastern Long Island — took excellent photos of the entire evening. Here is the link to her album on FaceBook:!/album.php?aid=2058752&id=1038123946&ref=mf

The PeaceSmiths Coffeehouse was great last night! Performing were: John Collins (think singer/songwriter, intellectual folk music, with some Elvis mixed in); Matauqus Tarrant of the Shinnecock Cultural Center and Museum, with songs and stories about the “June Meeting” tradition; and The Last Internationale, a folk duo with overtones of rock and roll, blues and punk (which they play in their other incarnation as a band.)

PeaceSmiths was pleased to be timely and topical, with the advent of strawberry season and strawberry festivals. (The Nassau County Strawberry Festival happens this week in Bellmore, from June 2-6). Matauqus’s talk was about “June Meeting”, a tradition of Long Island native peoples. The tradition, as carried out in Shinnecock, involves socials, and also visiting your elders to make and eat lots of strawberry shortcake. Matauqus performed some native songs, including several that were in the tradition of similar socials.

Thanks to everyone who makes PeaceSmiths happen, including, but not limited to:

Sonny Meadows, Judy Sanford Guise, Margie Carr, and all the board members, Frank Aurelio, Kari, Matt Bennett, John Phillips, Billy Breitenbach, RV Gilheany…and the audience who value music, poetry, activism, and camaraderie.
